4 Physical Tests You Can Conduct
How genuine 925 silver differs from brass, pewter, and nickel:
1. The 925 Laser Hallmark Stamp
Genuine 925 Hallmark Silver:Crisp laser or punch mark reading '925', 'S925', or 'Sterling'. Found on inner ring shanks, necklace clasps, and earring posts.
Imitation / Base Metals:No stamp, blurry markings, or stamped 'SP' (Silver Plated) / 'German Silver' (which contains zero real silver).
2. The Magnetism Test (Neodymium)
Genuine 925 Hallmark Silver:Sterling silver (Ag 92.5%) is completely non-magnetic. It will never stick to a neodymium magnet.
Imitation / Base Metals:Sticks firmly or shows strong magnetic pull, indicating an iron, steel, or cheap magnetic core.
3. Thermal Conductivity Test (Ice Cube)
Genuine 925 Hallmark Silver:Silver has the highest thermal conductivity of any precious metal. An ice cube placed on 925 silver will begin melting immediately as if placed on a hot skillet.
Imitation / Base Metals:Melts slowly at room temperature, indicating brass, zinc alloy, or copper alloy.
4. Nitric Acid & XRF Purity Spectrum
Genuine 925 Hallmark Silver:Under Nitric Acid, pure 925 silver turns creamy white or light grey. Under XRF spectroscopy, it analyzes at 92.5% elemental Ag.
Imitation / Base Metals:Turns bright green or bubbles vigorously, revealing cheap base copper or nickel alloy underneath.
